Oregon Department of Education in collaboration with WestEd and Understanding Language - Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning and Equity (UL-SCALE) invite you to participate in Building Educator Assessment Literacy (BEAL), a free one-day face-to-face professional development event. BEAL professional development events will be conducted by a team of Oregon educators who were trained by WestEd and UL-SCALE.

This project will draw on Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium performance tasks. During the professional development events, participants will be engaged in hand-scoring performance tasks and will consider the implications of the tasks and the student responses for teaching and learning. Participants will work in one of the following four break-out groups:

  • Math elementary*
  • Math secondary
  • ELA/Literacy elementary*
  • ELA/Literacy secondary

*Elementary educators are asked to register for either math or ELA/Literacy

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about performance assessments, how they assess college and career readiness, and how they support a balanced assessment system.
  • Use Smarter Balanced scoring tools and processes to analyze student work and develop a deeper understanding of the performance assessments and the instructional shifts of the Common Core State Standards
  • Begin to plan for all students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate mastery of the Common Core State Standards
