Safety Summit, bullying prevention conference bring together regional leaders, public safety

Two InterMountain ESD-sponsored workshops will bring together regional education leaders to make schools even safer for local students as the 2011-2012 school year gets ready to begin.

On Thursday (Aug. 4), the IMESD will host its second Safety Summit, which will educate rural law enforcement personnel as well as school administrators and staff on the elements that would allow for an effective response to school-based emergencies. Then on Friday (Aug. 5), school administrators, counselors, coaches, athletic directors and teachers have the opportunity to attend the “Eliminating Harassment, Bullying & Hate Crimes: A Leadership Challenge” conference.

State, local education leaders to gather for 3rd annual Eastern Oregon Executive Summit

Regional and statewide education leaders will converge for the 3rd annual Eastern Oregon Executive Summit July 25-26, sponsored by the InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) in Pendleton. State Superintendent of Schools Susan Castillo is expected to make the trip to the east side of the state to speak at the Summit, as are several other statewide education leaders.

The two-day event will bring together approximately 20 regional school chiefs from 14 school districts, and representatives and leaders from the Oregon Legislature, Oregon Department of Education, Confederation of Oregon School Administrators, Oregon School Boards Association, Oregon Association of Education Service Districts, and Oregon School Activities Association.

Grant to provide innovative equipment for special needs children

Eastern Oregon schools with special needs students often have struggled to find funding for leading-edge therapy tools to assist these children in the classroom. Acquiring these tools just got a little bit easier thanks to a $2,000 grant from Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston.

The grant has allowed the InterMountain Education Service District’s physical/occupational therapy and assistive technology programs to purchase tools for special needs children in the region. These tools include a supportive chair to allow a special needs child to access a regular education classroom, and new innovative stabilizing pressure shirts, pants and gloves from Spio!, which assist in hand writing, scissor skills and standing balance activities.

IMESD Board releases 2011-2012 schedule

The new InterMountain Education Service District Board of Directors has released its meeting schedule for the 2011-2012 year. The Board will meet the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. (with the August meeting at 6:30 p.m.), alternating between the IMESD's Pendleton and La Grande offices. IMESD becomes official June 1

June 1, 2011, marks an historical day in Oregon -- the establishment of the InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD). The merger between the Umatilla-Morrow and Union-Baker ESDs was more than a year-long process and completed on May 31.

"This is a momentous occasion for ESDs and for education in Eastern Oregon," said IMESD Superintendent Dr. Mark Mulvihill. "Much cooperation, collaboration and patience from our staff and board members has gone into this merger. I am so appreciative of each and every one of them for helping to make this merger so successful."

IMESD holds first meeting, swears in new board members

PENDLETON – Wednesday night (Dec. 8) marked the first-ever InterMountain ESD Board of Directors meeting. All seven newly-elected IMESD board members took their oaths of office, as well as drew a 2- or 4-year term length, lottery style. Jack Matlock was elected IMESD Board Chair, while Kathy Neal was elected Vice Chair.
