This is a Temporary position running through June 30, 2017. We hope to fill the position as soon as possible.

 

Description of Position:

Coordinating services and building partnerships with community/county/state agencies, and school district to protect and improve the health needs of students.  The registered nurse works to promote the health of students through prevention, case findings, early intervention and remediation of specific health problems.  Collaborate with Center for Human Development departments: Public Health, and Mental Health.

Direct services for special needs student requiring medical protocol/plan. Develop, train, delegate and monitor medical protocols/plans to ensure continuity of medical care and safety. Provide school staff guidance, training, and education with medically involved special education students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The functions of the specialized school nurse include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform assessment of current school/community health and resources to identify health disparities.

  • Develop a school health improvement plan to ensure full utilization of present resources.

  • Identify and engage potential community partners to meet school and community need as identified through assessment.

  • Serve as primary coordinator for services delivered through Wellness HUB including but not limited to: Oral Health, Mental Health, Physical Health

  • Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of health education activities.

  • Assist in preparation and distribution of health education materials, including pamphlets, reports, films, exhibits and other audio-visual aids.

  • Provide educational programs and public speaking lectures to school groups on prevention topics and public health issues.

  • Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through.

  • Provide on-going health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies.

  • Counsels with students concerning chronic health conditions, mental health issues, and medical problems in order to facilitate responsible decision-making practices.

  • Interpret the health status of pupils to parents and school personnel.

  • Recommend and help to implement modification of school programs to meet student health needs.

  • Participate as the health team specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health care component of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) for students with identified health needs.

  • Plan and implement school health management protocols for the child with special health needs and 504 students.

  • Supervisor instructional assistants working with health protocols/plans.

  • Complete documentation and reports as required by any funding sources

  • Participate in occasional after hours, health fairs, and community outreach.

  • Coordinate school and community health activities and serves as a liaison person between the home, school, and community.

  • Other duties as necessary and assigned.

  • Abide by all HIPPA laws and maintain confidentiality of clients and services provided at SBHC and Union County Health sites.

PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships with CHD Public Health staff members, school staff, parents, students, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community.

PROFFESIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Attend educations and training modules that encourage professional development and enhance continual learning; assist in training and mentoring of co-workers; and maintain regular and consistent attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing

  • Registered Nurse

  • Hold a valid license from State Board of Nursing

  • Valid School Nurse license through TSPC, optional

  • Two years’ experience as school nurse, preferred

  • Four or more years of nursing experiences or combination of education and experience.

  • Current Oregon driver’s license and ability to provide reliable transportation for own use.

  • Current CPR/AED for health care provider certification

    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

    Nurse may occasionally be required to travel away from home on over night assignments.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Employee will work on an annual contract. Any changes in contract days will be stipulated in each individual contract. It should be noted that salary and benefits to be established by IMESD Education Association in accordance with negotiated agreement with the IMESD Board of Directors. Department director shall establish the employees schedule and assignments.
