About the District
The Cove School District is a charter district which serves a student population of about 275 pupils and is the heart of the community. The board is fully committed to the success of every student and believes strongly in the goal of a 100 percent graduation rate.   The district is characterized by high academic standards, small class sizes, a highly-engaged staff that develops strong relationships with their students, the effective use of technology throughout the curriculum and instructional program, and innovative solutions to education challenges and a high degree of community involvement.

The district enjoys strong community support having passed bond issues for both additional classrooms and technology. The district is proud of its strong vocational agriculture, shop, and music programs.

About the Area
Cove is located on the eastern edge of the Grande Ronde Valley in Union County nestled between the nearby Wallowa Mountains and adjacent ridges. It derives its name from its unique setting and in earlier days was called Forest Cove.   To the east, the view is dominated by 7,400 foot Mt. Fanny while the Blue Mountains rise along the west side of the valley. LaGrande, the home of Eastern Oregon University and the largest community in the county, is sixteen miles away.

Cove is a small community with approximately 680 people living within the city limits. The greater Cove area has another 1,200 people. The majority of employed residents work outside the community, most in and around LaGrande.   The city has a public library and a small cluster of stores and restaurants in the downtown area. It is also home to several businesses and institutions of regional note. These include the historic Cove Warm Springs Swimming Pool, Artesian Blue Water Company, Gilstrap Brothers Winery, the Cove Christian Camp, and the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center. The Episcopal church and bishop's residence adjoining the Ascension School grounds are in the national registry of historic buildings.

Cove has been a fruit production center for over 100 years. Today, there are approximately 500 acres of commercial orchards, planted to sweet cherries on the hillsides above the town. Livestock production, wheat, mint, and a variety of other crops make up the remaining farm operations.

The presence of Eastern Oregon University provides easy access to a wide variety of college-related activities. In addition, the area abounds in opportunities for hiking, fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor sports.

Challenges of the Position
The board is interested in finding a strong and focused administrator who is willing to make a long-term commitment to the district. Many of the board members are experienced in their service to the district.

They are also seeking someone who will become a champion for the Cove District in terms of promoting enrollment and creating effective partnerships with the community, with other regional school districts and with outside agencies such as the education service district.

The board would also like to see the creation of a foundation for the enhancement of education opportunities.
