IMESD to host first-ever Union County Crystal Apple Awards

Release Date:
5/11/2012

This is the first year IMESD has held a Crystal Apple Awards ceremony in Union County. For the past 12 years, the IMESD – formerly as Umatilla-Morrow ESD – has hosted the Crystal Apple Awards each May in Pendleton to honor employees from public school districts in Umatilla and Morrow counties. Due to the UMESD’s merger with Union-Baker ESD in 2011, the IMESD has expanded the awards program into Union County. This year’s 36 winners from Umatilla and Morrow counties will receive their awards during a ceremony May 23 in Pendleton.

“The Crystal Apple Awards are a way for the IMESD and our local school districts to show their appreciation for staff who have shined over the past year,” said Casey White, director of the Crystal Apple Awards program. “The IMESD is very excited to bring this awards program to Union County this year because there are so many fantastic school employees throughout that region who deserve recognition for their work.”

In addition to the 14 Crystal Apple Award winners at the May 16 ceremony, the IMESD will also honor Eastern Oregon University and Blue Mountain Community College as Community Partner Award winners for their collaboration with IMESD and local school districts with the new Eastern Promise program. This new program, endorsed by Gov. John Kitzhaber, gives students another option for earning college credits – possibly even their associate’s degree – while still in high school. In addition, the IMESD and Mid Columbia Bus Company will reveal the name of the annual Doug Flatt Memorial Leadership Award winner, which honors an outstanding school district administrator.

The Crystal Apple Awards are sponsored by the IMESD, Mid Columbia Bus Company, Bank of Eastern Oregon, KUMA and KWRL radio, First Community Credit Union, Red Lion Hotel, Rotary Club of Pendleton, and St. Anthony Hospital.
