IMESD to honor 2013 Crystal Apple Award winners in two ceremonies
The InterMountain Education Service District will honor 49 education staff members from 17 school districts and the IMESD as 2013 Crystal Apple Award winners during two ceremonies this month. A ceremony to honor 35 education staff from school districts in Umatilla and Morrow counties and the IMESD will take place on May 15 at the Pendleton Red Lion Hotel Ballroom, and a ceremony to honor 14 education staff from school districts in Union County will take place on May 22 at the Gilbert Event Center at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.
Each year, the IMESD, along with local school districts, honors teachers and other education staff for their dedication and commitment to students, as well as their abilities to go above and beyond the call of duty in their schools. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. Winners are selected from these nominees by school district office administration.
“The Crystal Apple Awards are a way for the IMESD and our local school districts to show their appreciation for staff who have served as shining stars over the past year,” said Casey White-Zollman, director of the Crystal Apple Awards program. “We often take for granted the work our education employees do each day, so it’s nice to take time to really recognize those special people who really make a difference in our schools and with our kids.”
This will be the 14th annual Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards ceremony for Umatilla and Morrow counties, and the second in Union County.
In addition to the Crystal Apple Award winners, the IMESD will honor the Pendleton Public Library as its 2013 Community Partner Award recipient during the May 15 ceremony in Pendleton. The Pendleton Public Library has been a critical partner in the Eastern Oregon Early Learning Initiative. By collaborating with multiple partners, Library Director Kat Davis provided a vision for the innovative Ready to Learn card, which will help to create early family awareness of the P-20 education concept. This program will impact more than 13,000 children from age birth to 5 across five counties. A “Ready to Learn Card” will be issued to parents of these children in a free, accessible and easy process, similar to getting a library card. At the same time, Ready to Learn enrollment will create an Oregon College Savings Plan account in the child’s name. Each time the card is used in a ready to learn activity, incentive funds are deposited into a child’s Oregon College Savings Plan account. Without support from the Pendleton Public Library, this groundbreaking project would not have been possible.
In addition, the IMESD and Mid Columbia Bus Company will reveal the name of the annual Doug Flatt Memorial Leadership Award winner, which honors an outstanding school district administrator, at the Crystal Apple Award ceremonies.
The Crystal Apple Awards are sponsored by the IMESD, Mid Columbia Bus Company, First Investors, Bank of Eastern Oregon, First Community Credit Union, KCMB radio, 99.9 The River radio, KUMA radio, Rotary Club of Pendleton, St. Anthony Hospital, the Wildhorse Foundation, and WC Construction.
