IMESD to honor 2014 Crystal Apple Award winners in two ceremonies
The InterMountain Education Service District will honor 49 education staff members from 17 school districts and the IMESD as 2014 Crystal Apple Award winners during two ceremonies this month. A ceremony to honor 14 education staff from school districts in Union County will take place on May 14 at the Gilbert Event Center at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, and a ceremony to honor 35 education staff from school districts in Umatilla and Morrow counties and the IMESD will take place on May 21 at the Pendleton Red Lion Hotel Ballroom.
Each year, the IMESD, along with local school districts, honors teachers and other education staff for their dedication and commitment to students, as well as their abilities to go above and beyond the call of duty in their schools. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. Winners are selected from these nominees by school district office administration.
“The Crystal Apple Awards are a way for the IMESD and our local school districts to show their appreciation for staff who have served as shining stars over the past year,” said Casey White-Zollman, director of the Crystal Apple Awards program. “We often take for granted the work our education employees do each day, so it’s nice to take time to really recognize those special people who really make a difference in our schools and with our kids.”
This will be the 15th annual Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards ceremony for Umatilla and Morrow counties, and the third in Union County.
In addition to the Crystal Apple Award winners, the IMESD will honor Umatilla-Morrow Head Start as its 2014 Community Partner Award recipient during the May 21 ceremony in Pendleton. The Umatilla-Morrow Head Start has been an extraordinary partner with the Blue Mountain Early Learning HUB and Umatilla County Wraparound program. During its six years as a partner with the Umatilla County Wraparound program, Umatilla-Morrow Head Start has provided prevention and parent training opportunities and tools. The Blue Mountain Early Learning HUB is the only one in the state with strong early learning providers as co-leads of the program (IMESD and Umatilla-Morrow Head Start).
“IMESD and Umatilla-Morrow Head Start are the two largest providers of early learning in eastern Oregon, so it’s a natural partnership,” said IMESD Superintendent Dr. Mark Mulvihill.
In addition, the IMESD and Mid Columbia Bus Company will reveal the name of the annual Doug Flatt Memorial Leadership Award winner, which honors an outstanding school district administrator, at the Crystal Apple Award ceremonies.
The Crystal Apple Awards are sponsored by the IMESD, First Investors, Mid Columbia Bus Company, Bank of Eastern Oregon, First Community Credit Union, Wenaha Group, KUMA radio, Rotary Club of Pendleton, St. Anthony Hospital, and the Wildhorse Foundation.
