Saturday, March 2nd, IMESD’s Migrant Education Program (MEP) organized a Parent’s Conference at Umatilla High School. The focus was Advancing Together. In-between informative sessions and different speakers, participants were able to walk around a resource fair and get the latest information about upcoming events, opportunities, and programs that are available to families.
Laura Isiourdia from the Ford Family Foundation spoke as well, inspiring students and parents alike to turn their dreams into reality. During their conversation, she encouraged families to write down their goals, no matter how small. I could feel excitement and hope fill the room as they did this. Participants wrote diligently, some folks even wrote multiple goals down! While they did this, Isiourdia reminded parents of the importance of making education a collective, family goal. As a past participant of the Program (MEP) myself, it was especially heartwarming to see that another generation of students will be supported by family in their academic journey.
Various speakers were present, including the IMESD’s very own Rocio Hansen, who hosted an informative session on validating credits from other countries to the United States, using the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
Hansen was inspired to present this topic from past personal experience. When Hansen first came to the United States, she thought that she would have an advantage in the workforce, due to the education she had received in Mexico. However, this was not exactly the case. First, she would need to find out how to validate the credits she received, which is not an easy process. After using the NACES herself, Hansen views it as a trustworthy resource that can be shared with the community.
David Lougee, from the Umatilla School District Bilingual Program was a featured speaker as well. Lougee stressed the importance of keeping native languages alive. The morning continued on, with additional presentations from the Northwest Center Against Pesticides, and Oregon Legal Services.

Conferencia de Padres Migrantes, Avanzando Juntos
El sábado 2 de marzo, el Programa de Educación para Migrantes (MEP) del IMESD organizó una conferencia de padres en la escuela secundaria Umatilla. El foco fue Avanzar Juntos. Entre sesiones informativas y diferentes oradores, los participantes pudieron recorrer una feria de recursos y obtener la información más reciente sobre eventos, oportunidades y programas que están disponibles.
Laura Isiourdia de la Ford Family Foundation también presentó, inspirando a estudiantes y padres a convertir sus sueños en realidad. Durante la conversación, animó a las familias a escribir sus metas, por tan pequeñas que sean. Pude sentir la emoción y esperanza que surgía de ellos mientras escribían. Los participantes escribieron diligentemente, ¡algunos escribieron más de solo una meta! Mientras hacían esto, Isiourdia le recordó a los padres la importancia de convertir a la meta de la educación como un objetivo familiar y colectivo. Como ex-participante del Programa (MEP), fue especialmente reconfortante ver que otra generación de estudiantes puede contar con el apoyo de su familia en su trayectoria académica.
Rocío Hansen del IMESD dirigió una sesión informativa sobre cómo validar créditos de otros países a Estados Unidos, utilizando la Asociación Nacional de Servicios de Evaluación de Credenciales (NACES). Hansen se inspiró para presentar este tema a partir de experiencias personales pasadas. Cuando Hansen llegó por primera vez a los Estados Unidos, pensó que tendría una ventaja en el mercado laboral, debido a la educación que había recibido en México. Sin embargo, este no fue exactamente el caso. Primero, tendría que averiguar cómo validar los créditos que recibió, lo cual no es un proceso fácil. Después de utilizar a NACES, Hansen lo considera un recurso confiable que se puede compartir con la comunidad.
David Lougee, del Programa Bilingüe del Distrito Escolar de Umatilla también fue un orador destacado. Lougee destacó la importancia de mantener vivas las lenguas nativas. La mañana continuó con presentaciones adicionales del Centro Noroeste Contra Pesticidas, Servicios Legales de Oregón.
