Description of Workshop:

The democratic systems of our republic require conversation and compromise to solve problems. Civics Learning Project and Lane ESD believe students need to practice deliberative democracy in order to be the functioning community members we hope they become in adulthood. This interactive workshop aims to provide educators with practical strategies they can use in their classrooms to facilitate productive student discourse. We will focus on ways to strengthen classroom conversations and community engagement.

The workshop is centered around a text called Civil Discourse: Classroom Conversations for Stronger Communities by Joe Schmidt and Nichelle Pinkney. All participants will be given a copy of the book which shares important protocols and strategies that address having strong conversations to build knowledge, understanding, and empathy.
